Home Up

Monday 5th

We woke this morning to blazing sunshine. The day got off to a festive start with an Easter Egg hunt in the grounds of the Hotel, arranged by Sharon Tracey. The pictures below show some of the hunters.

Having had a long days cycling yesterday, it was decided to take it easy today. Keeping the islands theme going, Christy decided that we would all cycle to Isle d’Aix. This involved travelling on the bikes as far as a small harbour in the village of La Fumee. From there we took the ferry on its 30 minute journey to the Island. We arrived on the island at about 2.00pm. Having stopped for some food most groups cycled around the island, and then stopped at one of the many beeches to laze in still blazing sunshine, and swim for a while.

It has to be said that most of the swimmers found the water very cold, as can be seen by the expression on David Traceys face. Rob Nolan seemed to be the most impervious to the cold, and entertained the crowd with this John Kelly impression. Morgan on the other hand found conditions very cold and soon left the water, as can be seen from the photograph, looking for something that he was sure he had when he went into the water.   Swimming3.jpg (30255 bytes) Swimming6.jpg (31354 bytes) Swimming7.jpg (44337 bytes)

We made our way back to the harbour on the island at the appointed time of 4.00pm, to see our ferry sailing away across the bay back to the mainland. No problem, the next one was at 5.00pm. We all crowded into a creperie / ice cream shop just outside the harbour and spent lots of money for an hour. When the ferry arrived back to the island there was a large crown waiting to travel back to the mainland. Christy and some of his group, having stayed just those few minutes too long at their eatery, missed the ferry, as its capacity was only 400 and they were at the back of the queue. The main bulk of the wheelers made their way back to the hotel, and safe in the knowledge that dinner would not be for a few hours (until Christy’s group arrived back), some of the kids and adults walked down to the local swimming pool.

The weather was still good, but Niall Devine aided by Rob Nolan, found conditions particularly breezy for just a few moments just outside pool building, much to the amusement of the receptionist inside. The pool turned out to be excellent, and proved to be very popular during the week, especially given that it was situated just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

The swimming over and all groups back at the Hotel, we sat down to another fish dinner and a quiet evening. Here are some more pictures of some of the kids at dinner.

A few of the adults and some of the kids took the opportunity explore the town centre. They found an excellent creperie / bar. The owner of the establishment made us (both the kids and adults) very welcome for the entire duration of our stay.

(All in all about 20 to 30 miles were cycled by the groups today).
